Surplus vs Used vs New Steel Beams
-
Installed before: Surplus: No; Used: Yes; New: No
-
Typical condition: Surplus: Unused; may have surface rust or mill scale from storage; Used: Holes, clips, weld scars, coatings and wear vary; New: Mill finish
-
Typical lengths: Surplus: Often full or near-full lengths; Used: Varies; often shorter or cut; New: Standard mill or cut lengths
-
Documentation: Surplus: MTRs and inspection when available; Used: MTRs and inspection when available; New: Mill MTRs
-
Relative cost: Surplus: Usually below new; Used: Usually the lowest; New: Highest
-
Availability: Surplus: Depends on what's on the market; Used: Depends on what's on the market; New: Depends on mill rollings and service center stock
In short: surplus steel is unused steel with no project left to use it. Used steel has already served in a structure. New steel comes straight from the mill or a service center. All three have a place, and many jobs mix them.
Why Surplus Steel Beams Exist
Surplus beams come from ordinary business, not from defects. Common sources include:
-
Project overruns: contractors and fabricators order extra to cover cuts, changes and errors, and some of it ends up unused.
-
Cancelled or changed projects: when a job is cancelled, scaled down or redesigned, steel that was already bought or rolled can be left with no home.
-
Design changes: a revised drawing can change beam sizes after the original sizes are ordered.
-
Excess inventory: distributors, service centers and fabricators sell off slow-moving sizes and long-held stock.
-
Over-orders and minimums: mill and supplier minimums can leave buyers with more than they need.
-
Facility closures and shutdowns: plants and yards clearing out stored material.
Surplus Wide Flange Beams
Wide flange beams (W-shapes) are the most common surplus structural beams because they're the most common beams on the market. Surplus wide flange beams can turn up in nearly any series, from light W8 and W10 sections to W24–W44 girders. Most modern surplus W-beams are A992 or dual-certified A992/A572-50.
Surplus availability isn't predictable. One week might bring a full truckload of one size, and the next nothing at all in that size. That's why we search to your requirement instead of posting a list. For W-shape dimensions and weight ranges, see wide flange steel beams. To buy now, see surplus wide flange beams. For very heavy sections, see jumbo steel beams.
Other Surplus Steel We Source
Wide flange is only part of the picture. Birdie Steel Trading sources all types of surplus and used steel for heavy civil, marine and commercial construction, including:
-
Wide flange beams: standard W-shapes, plus king pile beams used in combination sheet pile walls
-
H-piles (HP-shapes): for driven foundations, shoring and earth retention
-
Steel pipe and pipe pile: from small-diameter pipe to large-diameter pipe over 42 in
-
Sheet piling: hot-rolled Z-profile sheets (AZ, NZ, ZZ, PZ and PZC), flat (PS) sections and cold-formed sheet pile
-
Steel plate: both under and over 1 in thick
-
Trestle and temporary bridges: crane access trestle, crane mats, falsework platforms and temporary bridge systems
The same approach applies to every category: send your requirement or your available material, and we'll work it through our nationwide network.
Cost Advantages of Surplus Steel Beams
Surplus beams usually sell below the cost of new steel, because the original owner would rather recover some value than store material they won't use. Buyers can benefit in several ways:
-
Lower material cost: surplus is usually priced below comparable new beams.
-
Unused condition: you get unused steel, often full-length, at a price below new steel.
-
Less waste: full-length surplus can mean fewer splices and less scrap.
-
Faster availability: surplus is often already rolled and sitting in a yard, which can help when mill or service center lead times are long.
How much you save depends on the size, grade, length, quantity, condition and how far the steel has to travel. Freight can cancel out a low price if the material is far from your job site, so we look at delivered cost, not just material price. That makes it a useful approach whether you're comparing surplus wide flange beam cost against new steel or used steel.
Quality and Documentation
Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus beams when available, so you can confirm grade and condition before you buy. If your project calls for Charpy testing, Buy America/domestic-melt or heat-specific material, let us know and we'll check what's available.
-
MTRs document grade, chemistry and mechanical properties.
-
Inspection confirms size, length, straightness and condition.
How to Buy Surplus Steel Beams
-
Send your list. Include the beam sizes (for example, W14x30), lengths, quantity or tonnage, grade, job location and need-by date.
-
Be flexible where you can. Accepting a heavier section in the same depth series, random lengths, or used material for secondary members widens the search.
-
Review the options. We'll present matching surplus or used material with its condition, documentation and delivery details.
-
Confirm and receive. Approve the material, then let Birdie arrange freight or arrange your own pickup. Loading is provided at pickup, and freight is usually included in your quote.

FAQ
What are surplus steel beams?
Surplus steel beams are unused structural steel beams left over from project overruns, cancelled or changed projects, over-orders and excess supplier inventory. They have never been installed in a structure.
What is the difference between surplus and used steel beams?
Surplus beams have never been installed. Used beams were previously part of a structure and may have holes, clips, weld scars or coatings. Surplus is usually priced between used and new steel.
Are surplus steel beams cheaper than new?
Surplus steel beams usually cost less than comparable new beams. Actual savings depend on size, grade, length, condition, quantity and freight to your job site.
Do you provide mill test reports and inspection?
Mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details are provided when available on used and surplus beams, so you can confirm grade and condition before you buy.
Can I sell my surplus steel beams to Birdie Steel Trading?
