Used & Surplus W14 Beams • Columns & Girders • MTRs When Available

Used and surplus W14 wide flange beams sourced nationwide,

with freight quotes, plus MTRs and inspection when available.

Birdie Steel Trading finds used and surplus W14 wide flange beams for columns, girders, and heavy framing, drawing on yards, fabricators, and job sites across the country. Availability shifts by length, grade, and location, so there is no fixed W14 list on this site. Tell us the designations, column lengths, piece count, grade, and where the job is, and we will look for W14 material that fits. Call 732-770-3599 or use the quote form below.

What W14 beams are used for

W14 is one of the standard column series in building frames. Lighter W14 sections also show up as beams and girders. Heavier W14 column sections get much stockier than the nominal 14 in depth suggests. A heavy column section such as W14x873 is about 23.6 in deep with a flange nearly 19 in wide (AISC Shapes Database v16.0 reference on the Wide Flange page).

Across the series, AISC lists weights from 22 to 873 lb/ft, with actual depths from about 13.7 to 23.6 in and flange widths from about 5.00 to 18.8 in (38 sections in the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 summary on our wide flange steel beams page).

Common W14 sizes we source

Column schedules and takeoffs usually call out W14 designations like the ones below; the figure after the x is the nominal weight in pounds per foot. Which of these turn up used or surplus at any given time depends on length, grade, and region:

W14x22, W14x26, W14x30, W14x34, W14x38, W14x43, W14x48, W14x53, W14x61, W14x68, W14x74, W14x82, W14x90, W14x99, W14x109, W14x120, W14x132, W14x145, W14x159, W14x176, W14x193, W14x211, W14x233, W14x257, W14x283.

W14 Sample Dimensions

The three rows below repeat the representative W14 entries from our Wide Flange page. Treat them as AISC reference figures for the shape, not as a list of W14 pieces Birdie has on hand.

W14x22: 22 lb/ft, depth 13.7 in, flange width 5.0 in

W14x30: 30 lb/ft, depth 13.8 in, flange width 6.73 in

W14x38: 38 lb/ft, depth 14.1 in, flange width 6.77 in

Figures come from the AISC Shapes Database v16.0. Before you design, detail, or fabricate W14 columns, check them against current AISC data and the project specifications.

Used and surplus W14 beams

Surplus W14s are unused pieces, often left over from column orders, that were never erected. Used W14s come out of existing frames, so expect cut ends at old splice locations (commonly a few feet above a floor level), bolt holes from beam connections, welded clips or stiffeners, and sometimes leftover base plates or cap plates. Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus W14 beams when available, so grade and condition can be checked before purchase.

If a reclaimed W14 will carry load as a column in a permanent structure, the engineer of record should approve it first.

Grades and MTRs

Most W14 columns rolled in recent decades are ASTM A992, with a 50 ksi minimum yield, and many are dual-certified to A572 Grade 50. Columns salvaged from older buildings are often A36 or A572 Grade 50, so the MTR is what tells you which strength you are working with. The heaviest W14 shapes, with flanges thicker than 2 in, can carry extra Charpy toughness requirements under the AISC Specification when they are spliced with complete-joint-penetration welds. If your column spec calls for that, or for a particular heat, say so in your request.

Delivery and pickup

W14 columns are often cut to one- or two-story tier lengths, which tends to keep them shorter than girder stock and easier to fit on a standard 48 to 53 ft flatbed. Heavy column weights change the math: one 30 ft W14x283 weighs about 8,490 lb, so a truck can reach its weight limit with only a handful of pieces. Birdie can arrange freight to your site, or you can pick up the steel with loading provided. Freight is usually included in the quote, and the cost depends on piece weights, lengths, distance, and how a truck gets in and unloads at your site.

FAQ

Do you stock W14 beams?

No fixed W14 inventory is posted. We search a nationwide network for used and surplus W14 columns and beams once we know the designation, column length, piece count, grade, and site location. You can also call 732-770-3599 to start the search.

What information do you need for a W14 quote?

List the full designation (for example W14x90 or W14x211), column lengths, number of pieces or tons, grade, the condition you can accept, the job site location, and your need-by date. A column schedule or takeoff speeds up the quote.

Are used W14 beams OK for structural work?

Often, yes. A used W14 can work as a column when its section, grade, and condition satisfy the design, including any splice or base plate details. MTRs and inspection document grade and condition, and the engineer of record should sign off before the piece goes into a permanent structure.

Can you find heavy W14 column sections?

Yes. Heavier W14 column weights are commonly requested along with lighter beam weights. Include the exact designation and length range so we search for the right profile.

Do W14 quotes include freight?

Usually, yes. Birdie quotes normally include freight, which for heavy W14 columns depends more on weight than on length. If you would rather collect the steel yourself, loading is provided at pickup. Give us the full delivery address with your request.
