Used and surplus W24 wide flange beams sourced nationwide, with freight quotes, plus MTRs and inspection when available.

Birdie Steel Trading locates used and surplus W24 wide flange beams nationwide for floor girders, transfer beams, and commercial and industrial framing. Each W24 request is matched against what our network has available at the time, so there is no static list here. Share the sizes, lengths, quantity, grade, and site location you need, or call 732-770-3599, and we will start looking. You can also use the quote form below.

What W24 beams are used for

W24 sits at the top of the mid-range W-shapes, the core of most commercial building frames. It is a common choice for floor girders, longer floor beams, and transfer members where a W18 or W21 is too shallow but a deep W27 to W44 section is more than the job needs.

Across the series, AISC lists weights from 55 to 370 lb/ft, with actual depths from about 23.6 to 28.0 in and flange widths from about 7.01 to 13.7 in (21 sections in the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 summary on our wide flange steel beams page). Heavier W24 sections get noticeably deeper and wider than the nominal 24 in.

Common W24 sizes we source

Below are W24 designations that come up often in floor and girder requests; the number after the x is the approximate weight in lb/ft. What the used and surplus market offers at any moment varies with length, grade, and region:

W24x55, W24x62, W24x68, W24x76, W24x84, W24x94, W24x103, W24x104, W24x117, W24x131, W24x146, W24x162, W24x176, W24x192, W24x207, W24x229, W24x250, W24x279, W24x306, W24x335, W24x370.

W24 Sample Dimensions

For quick reference, here are two W24 rows taken from the representative AISC table on our Wide Flange page. They describe the shape only and are not pieces in Birdie stock.

W24x55: 55 lb/ft, depth 23.6 in, flange width 7.01 in

W24x76: 76 lb/ft, depth 23.9 in, flange width 8.99 in

Used and surplus W24 beams

Surplus W24s were bought for a floor or roof package and never erected, so they often come in full or near-full lengths. Used W24s come out of existing floors and usually show bolt holes or coped ends at the old girder connections, welded shear tabs or clips, shear stud remnants on the top flange, or old paint and fireproofing. Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus W24 beams when available, which lets you confirm grade and condition up front.

Before a used W24 goes back into a permanent floor or roof, have the engineer of record approve it.

Grades and MTRs

New W24 girders are normally ASTM A992, which calls for a yield strength of 50 to 65 ksi and a yield-to-tensile ratio no higher than 0.85; many pieces are dual-certified A992/A572 Gr 50. Girders reclaimed from buildings framed before A992 became common in the late 1990s are often A36 (36 ksi yield) or A572 Gr 50. Because most current W24 girder designs assume 50 ksi steel, an A36 piece may not be a one-for-one swap, so let us know which grades your engineer will accept.

Delivery and pickup

Mid-weight W24s are among the easier girder sections to move. As a rough rule of thumb, designers often start floor beams at a depth of about span/20 to span/24, which points to spans of roughly 40 to 48 ft for a W24 (the engineer's design governs). Lengths like that fit a standard 48 to 53 ft flatbed; longer pieces need a stretch trailer. A 40 ft W24x76 weighs about 3,040 lb, so one truck can carry a good number of pieces, and lighter sections can often be unloaded with a large forklift or a small crane. Birdie can arrange delivery, or you can pick up with loading provided. Freight is usually part of the quote and is priced on weight, length, distance, and site access.

FAQ

Do you stock W24 beams?

W24 inventory is not posted online because availability keeps changing. Once you send the designation, length, quantity, grade, and location, or call 732-770-3599, we check our nationwide network for used and surplus W24 beams that fit.

What information do you need for a W24 quote?

Give us the full designation (for example W24x76 or W24x162), the lengths, quantity or tonnage, grade, what condition is acceptable, the job site location, and when you need the steel. A framing plan takeoff or material list makes quoting faster.

Are used W24 beams OK for structural work?

In many cases. A used W24 can serve as a floor girder or beam when its section, grade, and condition match what the design requires and holes or copes from its old connections do not conflict with the new ones. MTRs and inspection help document that, and the engineer of record should approve the material for permanent use.

Is a W24x76 actually 24 inches deep?

Not exactly. The 24 is the nominal depth series. AISC lists the actual depth of a W24x76 at about 23.9 in, and heavier W24 sections run up to about 28.0 in deep.

Do W24 quotes include freight?

Most Birdie quotes for W24 beams include freight. Mid-weight W24 loads usually ship on standard flatbeds, or you can arrange your own pickup with loading provided. Send the full delivery address with your request.
