Birdie Steel Trading tracks down used and surplus W40 wide flange beams nationwide for long-span girders, transfer beams, industrial platforms, and other deep-section work. Deep W40 pieces can be harder to find than lighter shapes, so each request is searched individually instead of being matched to a posted list. Send the sizes, lengths, quantity, grade, and job location, or call 732-770-3599, and we can start the search early.
What W40 beams are used for
W40 is one of the deepest W-shape series, used for long-span girders, transfer beams, industrial platforms, crane runways, and bridge work. Deep sections like these can be harder to find on the used and surplus market, so lead times and freight planning matter more. For the heaviest sections, also see our jumbo steel beams page.
Across the series, AISC lists weights from 149 to 655 lb/ft, with actual depths from about 38.2 to 43.6 in and flange widths from about 11.8 to 16.9 in (24 sections in the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 summary on our wide flange steel beams page).
Common W40 sizes we source
These W40 designations appear regularly in deep-girder requests; the figure after the x is the approximate weight per foot in pounds. Used and surplus W40 availability varies widely by length, grade, and region:
W40x149, W40x167, W40x183, W40x199, W40x211, W40x215, W40x235, W40x249, W40x264, W40x277, W40x278, W40x294, W40x297, W40x324, W40x327, W40x331, W40x362, W40x372, W40x392, W40x397, W40x431, W40x503, W40x593, W40x655.
W40 Sample Dimensions
One representative row from the AISC table on our Wide Flange page is shown below. It describes the W40x167 shape and is not a Birdie stock listing.
W40x167: 167 lb/ft, depth 38.6 in, flange width 11.8 in
Values are representative and based on the AISC Shapes Database v16.0. For deep girders, confirm section properties against current AISC data and your project specifications before design, fabrication, or structural use.
Used and surplus W40 beams
Surplus W40 girders were rolled or bought for a project and never erected, which often means long, full-length pieces. Used W40s come out of existing heavy structures such as industrial buildings and platforms, and can show web penetrations, stiffener plates, welded connection material, and coatings. Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus W40 beams when available, so you can confirm grade and condition before committing to a heavy purchase.
A deep girder carries a lot of load, so the engineer of record should approve any reclaimed W40 before it goes into permanent structural use.
Grades and MTRs
W40s for buildings are usually ASTM A992 or A572 Grade 50, and older salvaged pieces may be A36 or A572 Grade 50. Deep beams for bridge work are commonly specified to ASTM A709, the bridge steel standard, often in Grade 50, which can add toughness testing requirements. The MTRs show which specification each heat was produced to, so tell us up front whether your project needs A992, A572, or A709, or can accept A36.
Delivery and pickup
W40 freight takes planning. Deep girders often come in long lengths, and pieces longer than a standard 53 ft trailer move on stretch trailers and may need oversize permits, which vary by state and can add time and cost. Weight adds up quickly too: a 60 ft W40x297 is about 17,820 lb, so a typical legal load holds only about two such pieces. Most sites need a crane, not a forklift, to offload deep W40 pieces, so plan the lift and truck access in advance. Birdie can arrange the freight, or you can arrange pickup with loading provided, and freight is usually included in your quote. Because deep sections are harder to find and to ship, allow a longer lead time than for lighter W-shapes.

FAQ
Do you stock W40 beams?
Live W40 inventory is not posted. Deep sections are sourced through our nationwide network for each request, so send size, length, quantity, grade, and location, or call 732-770-3599, and allow time for the search.
What information do you need for a W40 quote?
Include the full designation (for example W40x167 or W40x297), the lengths, quantity or tonnage, grade, acceptable condition, delivery location, and the date you need the steel. Deep sections often need longer lead times, so share your schedule early.
Are used W40 beams OK for structural work?
It depends on the girder. A used W40 can work when its section, grade, and condition meet the design and any old web penetrations or stiffeners are accounted for. MTRs and inspection help document the steel, and the engineer of record should approve it for permanent structural use.
How heavy are W40 beams?
AISC lists W40 weights from 149 to 655 lb/ft. A 40 ft length of W40x167 weighs about 6,680 lb, so trucking, permits, and site access matter when planning delivery.
Do W40 quotes include freight?
Freight is usually included in Birdie quotes. For W40s, the quote reflects lengths, weights, and any oversize or permit requirements. You can also arrange your own pickup with loading provided. Include the full delivery address and any crane or access limits at your site.
