Wide Flange Beams for Sale: Used & Surplus W-Beams
Wide Flange Steel • Used W-Beams • Surplus W-Shapes • Nationwide Sourcing
Looking for W beams for sale? Birdie Steel Trading sources used and surplus W-beams for contractors, fabricators and steel buyers nationwide. Mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details are provided when available, so you know the grade and condition before you buy. We don't post live inventory, because good used and surplus steel moves fast. Instead, tell us what you need and where you need it, and we'll search our network for matching material.
Used and Surplus W-Beams, Sourced to Your Spec
Most beam sellers can only offer what's sitting in their own yard. Birdie Steel Trading works from your requirement outward. We search a nationwide network of steel owners, fabricators, contractors, suppliers and project sites for wide flange beams for sale that match your size, length, grade and condition requirements, then quote what we find.
-
Used wide flange beams: reclaimed W-beams from demolition, dismantled structures and retired equipment, with MTRs and inspection details when available.
-
Surplus wide flange beams: unused beams left over from overruns, over-orders and cancelled projects, with MTRs and inspection details when available. See surplus steel beams.
-
Hard-to-find sections: deep, heavy or uncommon W-shapes that are hard to get through normal distribution.
Wide Flange Beam Sizes We Source
We source W-shapes across the full AISC range, from W4 through W44 nominal depths. Common requests include:
-
W8, W10 and W12: light framing, lintels, mezzanines, equipment supports and columns
-
W14: columns and heavy framing, from light W14x22 sections to heavy column sections
-
W16 through W24: floor beams, girders and roof framing
-
W27 through W44: long-span girders, transfer beams, industrial platforms and bridge work. For the heaviest sections, see jumbo steel beams.
Searching for used I-beams for sale? Most I-shaped beams used today are wide flange (W) shapes, so check which profile your drawings call for. See wide flange vs I-beam vs H-pile for the differences. Beyond W-beams, we also source H-piles, steel pipe and pipe pile, sheet piling, steel plate, and trestle, temporary bridges and crane mats. See surplus steel beams for the full list.
Full W-series dimensions and weight ranges are on our wide flange steel beams page.
What Affects the Price of Wide Flange Beams
Used and surplus steel is priced deal by deal, not from a fixed price list. These are the factors that drive your quote:
Weight per foot
Steel is usually priced by weight, so the second number in the designation matters. A W12x40 weighs about 40 lb/ft and a W12x26 about 26 lb/ft, so the same length of W12x40 costs more. Going to a lighter section that still meets your design can lower the cost.
Length
Longer beams generally carry more value per foot because they can be cut to many uses. Short or random lengths often cost less. If you can splice, or work with random lengths, tell us. It opens up more material options.
Grade
A992 and A572-50 (50 ksi) material, especially with documentation, generally costs more than older A36 steel. Ask only for the grade your design actually needs.
Condition
Unused surplus beams usually cost more than used beams. Among used beams, clean, straight material with few holes or attachments costs more than beams that need cleanup, trimming or straightening. See condition grades below.
Freight
Freight can be a large part of the delivered cost of steel, especially for heavy sections, long lengths or long hauls. Material close to your job site can beat a lower price that's farther away.
Quantity
Larger quantities and full lots can lower the per-unit cost. Very small orders may cost more per ton once handling and trucking are included.
Market conditions also play a part. Used and surplus steel prices tend to follow the broader steel and scrap markets, so quotes are time-sensitive. Birdie's quotes are valid for 30 days.
Condition Grades of Used Steel Beams
There's no single industry standard for grading used structural steel. The categories below are general industry descriptions, not Birdie Steel Trading grades. Sellers use different terms, so your quote describes each item's actual condition instead of a grade label.
-
Surplus / unused: What it usually means: Never installed. May have mill scale or surface rust from storage. Typical uses: Main framing and any use where unused steel is preferred
-
Used – clean: What it usually means: Previously installed. Straight, with minimal holes, clips or weld scars. Little loss of section. Typical uses: Framing, platforms, ag/industrial buildings, retrofits
-
Used – fair: What it usually means: Has bolt holes, cut-off clips, weld scars, paint or fireproofing. May need trimming or cleanup. Typical uses: Secondary framing, supports, shoring, racks, temporary works
-
Used – rough / salvage: What it usually means: Heavy holes, sweep or camber, pitting or damage. Usually sold as shorter cut lengths. Typical uses: Cribbing, short supports, non-structural uses
Mill test reports and inspection details are provided when available. Your quote describes each item's condition, so you know what you're getting before it ships.
Inspection and Mill Test Reports
Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus beams when available.
-
MTRs document grade, chemistry and mechanical properties.
-
Inspection confirms size, length, straightness and condition, including holes, clips, welds, coatings and corrosion.
-
Special requirements: if you need Charpy testing, Buy America/domestic-melt or heat-specific material, let us know and we'll check what's available.
For permanent structural use, share any available MTRs and inspection results with your engineer of record.
Delivery and Freight
We source wide flange beams nationwide and help buyers get material to their job site.
-
Your choice of freight: Birdie can arrange freight to your job site, or you can arrange your own pickup and freight.
-
Delivery: Beams usually ship on flatbed trucks. Long or heavy loads may need a stretch trailer or permits.
-
Pickup: Pickup is available, and loading is provided at pickup.
-
Freight in your quote: Freight is usually included in your quote. Give us the full delivery address, any site access limits, and the equipment you'll have on site for unloading (forklift, telehandler or crane), so freight can be quoted accurately.
How to Request a Quote
-
Send your requirement. Include W-shape designations, lengths, quantities or tonnage, grade, acceptable condition, job location and need-by date. A takeoff or material list is ideal.
-
We search our network. We look for used and surplus material that matches or comes close to your requirement, and we'll suggest workable alternatives such as a heavier section in the same depth series.
-
Review the quote. You'll get the available sizes, lengths, condition, documentation and delivery options. Freight is usually included, and quotes are valid for 30 days.
-
Confirm and receive. Approve the material and delivery, review any available MTRs and inspection details, and schedule delivery or pickup.

Because Birdie Steel Trading sources material to each requirement, we quote case by case, and quotes are valid for 30 days. Send your sizes, lengths, quantity and location for a quote.
Are surplus wide flange beams cheaper than new?
Surplus and used wide flange beams usually cost less than new steel bought from a mill or service center. Actual savings depend on size, length, grade, condition, quantity and freight.
Do used beams come with mill test reports?
Mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details are provided when available on used and surplus beams, so you can confirm grade and condition before you buy.
Can you deliver wide flange beams to my job site?
