I-Beams We Source Nationwide
Birdie Steel Trading sources used and surplus I-beams nationwide for framing, trailers, hoists, supports, and general fabrication. We do not post a live stock list. Send your sizes, lengths, quantity, grade, and job location, and we search our network for matching material. Call 732-770-3599 or use the quote form below.
What I-Beams Are
"I-beam" is used loosely in the steel trade. Strictly, it means an American Standard beam, or S-shape. S-shapes have narrow flanges with sloped inside faces, and the depth is the nominal size. Many buyers also say I-beam when they mean a W-shape wide flange beam, which has wider, parallel flanges and is the most common structural beam in modern buildings. H-piles (HP shapes) look similar but have flanges and web of about equal thickness and are made for foundation piling. When you request a quote, give the full designation (for example S12x31.8 or W12x26) so we search for the right profile. If you are not sure which you need, send a photo or a measurement of depth, flange width, and flange shape.
Common S-beam sizes we source
S-shape designations give nominal depth in inches and approximate weight per foot. The AISC S-shape series runs from S3x5.7 up to S24x121. Availability of used and surplus material changes by length, grade, and location: S3x5.7, S3x7.5, S4x7.7, S4x9.5, S5x10, S6x12.5, S6x17.25, S8x18.4, S8x23, S10x25.4, S10x35, S12x31.8, S12x35, S12x40.8, S12x50, S15x42.9, S15x50, S18x54.7, S18x70, S20x66, S20x75, S20x86, S20x96, S24x80, S24x90, S24x100, S24x106, S24x121. Confirm dimensions against the current AISC Shapes Database and your project specifications before design, fabrication, or structural use. For wide flange sizes, see our wide flange steel beams page.
Used vs surplus I-beams
Surplus I-beams have never been installed. They are usually leftover project material, mill overruns, or excess stock, and may show surface rust from storage. Used I-beams have been in service and are recovered from demolition, plant changes, or dismantled structures. They may have holes, clips, weld scars, paint, or coatings, and lengths vary. Used beams often cost less than new material, while surplus beams are closer to new condition. Tell us which conditions you can accept, and we will quote what matches.
Grades
S-shapes are commonly ASTM A36. W-shape wide flange beams made today are usually ASTM A992, often dual-certified A992/A572-50. Older used wide flange beams are often A36. Tell us which grades you can accept when you request a quote.
MTRs and inspection
Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus beams when available, so you can confirm grade and condition before you buy. For permanent structural use, the engineer of record should approve the material.
Delivery and pickup
We source nationwide and help coordinate delivery. Freight is usually included in your quote and depends on size, length, weight, distance, and site access. You can also arrange your own pickup, with loading provided.

FAQ
Do you stock used I-beams?
We do not post live inventory. We source used and surplus I-beams through a nationwide network. Send size, length, quantity, grade, and location, or call 732-770-3599, and we will search for matching material.
What is the difference between an S-beam and a W-beam?
An S-beam (American Standard beam) has narrow flanges with sloped inside faces. A W-beam (wide flange) has wider flanges with parallel faces. Both are often called I-beams, so include the full designation when you request a quote.
What information do you need for an I-beam quote?
Send the full designation (for example S8x18.4 or S24x100), lengths, quantity or tonnage, grade, acceptable condition, job site location, and need-by date. A material list or takeoff helps us quote faster.
Are used I-beams OK for structural work?
Often yes, when the section, grade, and condition meet the design. MTRs and inspection help document that. The engineer of record should approve material for permanent structural use.
Do I-beam quotes include freight?
Freight is usually included in Birdie quotes. You can also arrange your own pickup; loading is provided at pickup. Include your full delivery address when you request a quote.
