Birdie Steel Trading locates used and surplus W27 wide flange beams nationwide for longer floor and roof spans, girders, transfer beams, and industrial framing. W27 is the first of the deep W-shape series, and reclaimed pieces turn up less often than W18 or W24 material, so each request is searched on its own rather than matched to a posted list. Tell us the sizes, lengths, quantity, grade, and job location, or call 732-770-3599, and we will start looking.
What W27 beams are used for
W27 beams are used where spans get longer than a W24 handles comfortably: long-span floor and roof beams, girders that carry other beams, transfer beams over open areas, and framing for industrial buildings, parking structures, and equipment platforms. The heavier weights also show up in heavy industrial framing. For the heaviest deep sections, see our jumbo steel beams page.
Across the series, AISC lists weights from 84 to 539 lb/ft, with actual depths from about 26.7 to 32.5 in and flange widths from about 10.0 to 15.3 in (17 sections in the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 summary on our wide flange steel beams page). W27x84 through W27x129 have flanges about 10 in wide, while W27x146 and heavier have flanges about 14 to 15.3 in wide.
Common W27 sizes we source
These are the W27 designations in the current AISC table; read W27x94 as a nominal 27 in depth at about 94 lb per foot. The lighter, narrow-flange weights are the ones requested most, and used and surplus availability varies by length, grade, and region:
W27x84, W27x94, W27x102, W27x114, W27x129, W27x146, W27x161, W27x178, W27x194, W27x217, W27x235, W27x258, W27x281, W27x307, W27x336, W27x368, W27x539.
W27 Sample Dimensions
Four W27 rows from the AISC Shapes Database v16.0 are shown below, covering both flange families. They are reference figures for the shape, not pieces Birdie has on hand.
W27x84: 84 lb/ft, depth 26.7 in, flange width 10.0 in, web 0.460 in, flange 0.640 in
W27x114: 114 lb/ft, depth 27.3 in, flange width 10.1 in, web 0.570 in, flange 0.930 in
W27x146: 146 lb/ft, depth 27.4 in, flange width 14.0 in, web 0.605 in, flange 0.975 in
W27x194: 194 lb/ft, depth 28.1 in, flange width 14.0 in, web 0.750 in, flange 1.34 in

Used and surplus W27 beams
Surplus W27 beams were bought for a project and never installed, so they often come in long mill lengths. Used W27s come out of existing buildings and parking or industrial structures and may have web bolt holes, coped or torch-cut ends, welded stiffeners or connection plates, shear studs on composite girders, and coatings or fireproofing. Long beams and girders are sometimes fabricated with camber, so a reclaimed piece may not be straight. Birdie Steel Trading provides mill test reports (MTRs) and inspection details on used and surplus W27 beams when available, so grade and condition can be confirmed up front.
Because a W27 often carries other framing, the engineer of record should approve any reclaimed piece before permanent structural use.
Grades and MTRs
Building-grade W27s are usually ASTM A992, often dual-certified with A572 Grade 50, while beams from older structures may be A36 or A572 Grade 50. The heaviest W27 sections, W27x307 and up, have flanges thicker than 2 in, and the AISC Specification can add Charpy toughness requirements for those heavy shapes when they are spliced with complete-joint-penetration welds. Check the MTR for the specification each heat meets, and tell us up front which grades your project accepts.
Delivery and pickup
W27 freight is mostly about length. Pieces up to 53 ft fit a standard flatbed, while longer girders need a stretch trailer and may need oversize permits that vary by state. A 50 ft W27x94 weighs about 4,700 lb, so a typical load holds several pieces, but heavier weights fill a truck quickly. Many sites need a crane rather than a forklift to unload deep W27 pieces safely. Birdie can arrange delivery, or you can arrange pickup with loading provided. Freight is usually included in your quote and depends on weight, length, distance, and site access. Allow a bit more lead time than for shallower beams.

FAQ
Do you stock W27 beams?
We do not post live W27 inventory. Used and surplus W27 beams are sourced through our nationwide network for each request, so send the size, length, quantity, grade, and location, or call 732-770-3599.
What information do you need for a W27 quote?
Include the full designation (for example W27x94 or W27x146), the lengths, quantity or tonnage, grade, acceptable condition, job site location, and need-by date. Let us know if a splice is acceptable, since long W27 lengths can take longer to find.
Are used W27 beams OK for structural work?
They can be. A used W27 can work as a beam or girder when its section, grade, and condition meet the design and existing holes, stiffeners, or camber are accounted for. MTRs and inspection give the engineer of record what they need to review the piece, and their approval is needed before permanent structural use.
Why do W27 beams come in two flange widths?
AISC rolls W27 in two families. W27x84 through W27x129 have flanges about 10 in wide, and W27x146 and heavier have flanges about 14 in wide or more. Send the exact designation so we search the right family.
Do W27 quotes include freight?
In most cases, yes. W27 freight pricing reflects piece lengths, weights, and any stretch trailer or permit needs. Pickup is also an option, with loading provided. Include the delivery address and any crane or access limits.
